Visiting the dentist can cause some patients to experience anxiety, fear, or worry. If you or a member of your family struggles with any of these emotions when they think about visiting the dentist, don’t worry— you’re not alone.
Many people don’t like the idea of going to the dentist, but please don’t put off coming to see us because of anxiety or worry. You wouldn’t put off seeing your doctor for your yearly physical, right? Well, your oral health and teeth deserve careful attention just as much as your body does. The field of dentistry has developed some techniques that help patients with anxiety or fear to feel more relaxed when they come visit us.
What Is Dental Sedation?
Dental sedation is how we help patients manage their anxiety and fear at the thought of coming to see the dentist for a procedure or treatment.
At Drs Chapman & Owens, we offer three types of dental sedation: laughing gas, IV sedation, and oral sedation.
Laughing Gas: This is inhaled during a procedure to produce clam feelings. After a few inhalations, patients begin to feel more relaxed and calm. The gas acts quickly and wears off quickly, so patients can leave their appointment clear-headed with no after-effects.
IV Sedation: This form of sedation uses an IV to administer a moderate-level sedative. It is extremely fast and direct. This is an excellent option for someone who has moderate-to-severe dental anxiety. Unlike laughing gas, however, this sedation type will require a ride home from the appointment.
Oral Sedation: Oral sedation is a pill that patients take. It takes effect quickly and has much the same effect as laughing gas. Patients who opt for oral sedation will need someone to drive them to and from our office for safety reasons.
We can talk to you about your options and help you find a way to overcome your dental anxiety.
