Tooth Extractions
Routine removals and wisdom teeth, handled with care and comfort.
Losing baby teeth is a natural part of growing up — but as we mature, additional extractions are sometimes needed. You may have an infected tooth that must come out to preserve your oral health, or extra teeth you don’t need, like wisdom teeth.
Whatever the situation, Dr. Owens is ready to help with all your extraction needs.
Tooth Extraction
The process is much the same in most situations, whether it’s a stubborn baby tooth or a permanent tooth being removed due to infection.
We numb the area around the tooth and carefully remove it. Permanent teeth are somewhat more involved, since their roots extend down toward the jawbone, while baby teeth come out more easily. Either way, we take care to keep you comfortable and relaxed throughout.
Wisdom Teeth Removal
Most people have wisdom teeth, and if we had room for them, there’d be no reason to remove them. The reality is that the vast majority of us don’t have space for four extra teeth.
That’s why removal has become standard practice. If wisdom teeth erupt fully into a mouth with no room for them, they can cause significant pain and damage the surrounding teeth — so we prefer to remove them sooner rather than later.
The Procedure and Recovery
When you come in to have your wisdom teeth removed, we’ll make sure you’re comfortable and free of pain throughout the procedure. Afterward, a few guidelines will help your mouth heal properly:
- Keep the area covered in gauze for the first few hours.
- Take any medication as directed.
- Avoid sharp or crumbly foods that can lodge in the sockets — popcorn, chips, and similar.
- Stick to soft, smooth foods like yogurt, smoothies, and mashed potatoes.
- Don’t use a straw. The suction can dislodge the healing clot and damage the socket.
Most patients heal fully within one to two weeks. Following these guidelines closely makes a real difference in recovery.
