Root Canals

Root Canal Therapy at Owens Dental

Many people hear the term “root canal” and immediately tense up. In reality, root canals are beneficial and important to your overall oral health — the procedure relieves pain from infection rather than causing it. That’s why we offer root canal therapy at Owens Dental.

What Is a Root Canal?

“Endodontics” refers to the study and treatment of dental pulp. A root canal is an endodontic procedure we offer to restore your oral health.

The term itself actually names a part of the tooth: the pulp-filled chamber at the root. The procedure took its name from the location where the work is done.

When the pulp of a tooth becomes badly infected, treatment is needed to save the tooth and stop the infection from spreading.

How Does Root Canal Therapy Work?

Root canal therapy is the process of clearing infection out of a tooth. When you come in with extreme pain localized to one tooth, we examine it to determine the cause.

If we find the pulp is infected, we may recommend root canal treatment. We perform it on teeth that are badly decayed but still able to be saved — and we use advanced equipment designed to make the procedure faster and more comfortable.

The tooth is first numbed so you don’t feel pain or discomfort during the procedure. We then carefully remove the infected pulp and nerve tissue, and clean the inside of the tooth thoroughly to make sure no infected tissue remains.

Once the tooth is clean, we seal it to keep decay and infection from returning. We may also recommend a crown for added protection. From there, the tooth is fully restored.
